The most basic thing that you can do is get a copy of each of your credit reports and make sure that they are all accurate.  It is estimated that only 13% of all credit reports are completely accurate, so there is a good chance that you will find something in your credit report that should not be there.  You may be surprised at just how small details, like a limit on a credit card, can hurt your credit score.  Even worse, some people find accounts that do not even belong to them in their credit files.  Getting legitimate errors corrected is one of the first steps to take to improve your credit report.

You can also dispute items that you know are accurate.  While this was once an extremely effective method of improving credit, the reality is that it is not nearly as useful as it once was.  The reason is that computers have made the dispute process much easier for the lenders to respond to, so your chances of getting something deleted just because they fall behind is slim.

Debt Validation

Debt validation is proof from a collection agency that you in fact actually owe them money. Request a copy of the contract with complete account information and documentation to show they actually are the owner of this debt. This is an alternative to get relief from their irritating tactics and from reporting to credit bureaus.
